Zero Trust and/or security rules with proxy off

What is the name of the domain?

What is the issue you’re encountering

Use CF security services with CDN off

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I want to use Cloudflare for DNS, Zero Trust for 2FA for my wp-admin login page, and some security rules (block known bots, xmlrpc.php page, and unwanted crawlers).

However, I don’t want CDN. Since the site is new and not globally focused (cache won’t be warmed at all the various CF nodes), I believe the CDN will actually slow my site down until I have more regular, increased traffic.

Can the any or all of the Cloudflare features I mention above be used if my DNS is NOT proxied?

If I do need to proxy the DNS (to use said services) and I create a Cloudflare rule with a wildcard to bypass the cache on the entire domain, would my website traffic bypass the CDN and all the other CF services not in use to be served directly from my server?

Thanks for any suggestions!

No. Requests will go direct to your origin and not through Cloudflare.

Requests would pass through Cloudflare first, but nothing would be cached.

Requests would pass through Cloudflare first so anything you have configured in Cloudflare, plus some standard automated features (DDoS protection, security level, etc) would be in place.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I am guessing that the only way to know if all traffic passing through CF without caching adds any significant latency would be to test it with DNS proxied and proxy turned off. I’m aware of CDN Performance Check | Uptrends

Is there anything better or in addition to that?
