Wrong traffic routing from Germany

Hi Community,

I just noticed that access to our company websites (proxied by Cloudflare) is extremely slow when accessing from Germany.
Checking ping times to one of the sites (like www.futronika.de) they average aroung 200 ms.

Traceroute from Deutsche Telekom looks like this:

Which colo are you being routed to (from the device that the traceroute is from) on your website?

https://www.futronika.de/cdn-cgi/trace will give you all the details.

https://speed.cloudflare.com/ also gives a visual map to show you your location vs the colo it’s taking you to.

https://www.futronika.de/cdn-cgi/trace gives me “colo=MUC” which is perfect since I’m rather close to munich.
Interestingly this link https://speed.cloudflare.com/ gives me Düsseldorf which is around 500 km away but not bad either.

Anyway, I just noticed that speed is back to normal.Website opens fast and ping time is fast again.
Seems like that was just a short glitch somewhere at Cloudflare or Deutsche Telekom.
Next time if that happens again I got the right tools in place thanks to you!

Possibly - Cloudflare operates on an anycast basis so the IP will be the same but users will get routed to where the ISP wants that traffic to go, so it isn’t always strictly the closest colo.

Colos can also be rerouted during outages/downtime/maintenance so sometimes you’ll go to one further away than you usually would anyways as well.

There’s lots of factors involved but in the future, /cdn-cgi/trace on a site will give you all the information you need to pass it onto support.
