Wrong dimensions for thumbnails, video looks OK

Hi guys,

I’m trying to upload some video from an archive. The video playback looks good, but the thumbnails are in the wrong dimensions.

They seem to be 4x3 while the video is 16x9. I added a thumbnail as example. The original is an older file encoded as MPEG-2 SD broadcast quality (.m2p)

Thumbnail:

Video:

These files use the PAL standard with a broadcast-stream picture size of 720x576 pixels. 16x9 was achieved with non-square pixels.

Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p(tv, top first), 720x576 [SAR 64:45 DAR 16:9], 8000 kb/s, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, 50 tbc

I have about 2TB of these files and am not looking to re-encode the whole archive. That would be almost undoable for my MacBook or NAS and lead to a loss of quality in these already SD files. Two examples are 6e6ebe7de8bc781adde45789e552e301 and c9c07420dcd010177ad01b3bf9c2f735

Any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

We’re seeing the same issue. The impact is unwanted GUI jank in use cases where you have a bunch of image thumbnails in a grid. When you click to start playing the video, the area that the video takes shrinks and the items are no longer equivalent in height.
