Wordpress Image Optimization Plugin + Cloudflare

Hey Guys, I am trying to figure out the best solution for image optimization for my wordpress website. I am considering using an image optimization plugin such as Shortpixel and cloudflare’s Polish feature. Will this be too much and redundant to use both? Will they cause problems with each other? I was told by another developer that I am working with that I don’t need to optimize my images before adding them to my website and that we should let shortpixel or cloudflare handle everything. Is this correct?

I do have some large files on my home page that are about 1 MB in size. Do I need to optimize them first before adding to website or can I let Shortpixel and/or cloudflare handle it? Also, I have read that cloudflare only optimizes images onced cached, and so the images won’t be optimized the first time a new user visits the website. True? What is the best solution for image optimization when it comes to SEO and load speed?

Thanks in advance for the help! Grayson

Best way is setup a test wordpress site and try every image optimization plugin and solution and see what works for you. I usually optimise my images before I upload them to my blog so the original image is optimal out of the box and then let cloudflare do auto webP conversion and mirage for mobile devices.

But I’ve tested EWWW + Imsanity wordpress plugins for wordpress image optimisation - did my write up at https://community.centminmod.com/threads/playing-with-ewww-image-optimizer-wordpress-plugin.12573/ along with my own shell optimise-images.sh (https://github.com/centminmod/optimise-images/) bulk image optimisation and webP conversion tests starting at https://community.centminmod.com/threads/playing-with-ewww-image-optimizer-wordpress-plugin.12573/#post-53333 if you have SSH access to server etc. Basically point shell script at a directory and it optimises png/jpg files and makes a webP copy too for conditionally being served by web server - example at https://github.com/centminmod/optimise-images/blob/master/examples/examples-optimise-webp-nginx-300417.md

There’s also webP Express plugin for webP conversion I wrote about and tested at https://community.centminmod.com/threads/installing-webp-express-wordpress-plugin-on-centmin-mod-nginx.17469/

However, if you have full control and only you or your developers upload images, then optimising them before upload is probably alot easier. I’ve used free irfanview image app to optimise my images for the web for over 10+ yrs - see example I posted in 2nd post and onwards at https://community.centminmod.com/threads/zopfli-optimization-literally-free-bandwidth.5516/ - the difference can be huge for image sizes with little or no difference in image quality - example posted shows a pbfcomic PNG image being reduced from 655KB to 135KB with no difference in image quality for PNG and webP version is 83-88KB in size.
