When I use Cloudflare proxy on my DNS register my webpage don't works, but with DNS only mode it works. Why?

I have an HTTPS web server on port 443 and when I activate the “Cloudflare proxy” in the DNS record (type A) I get the 504 “Gateway timeout” error. If I leave it on “DNS only” it works. What can be caused this?
