What is the point of the cloudflare app?

What’s the difference between using this app and just manually putting in 1.1.1.1 in my dns settings?

I’ve installed it but now I have another app running - do I need to? Previously I had just put 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 manually as my dns settings (on my mac). Is there any actual difference?

The app is an easy way to use DNS over HTTPS, which tunnels your DNS queries through HTTPS so your ISP can’t spy on those. Regular DNS queries to 1.1.1.1 (or anywhere else) are unencrypted and observable over Port 53.

Ah, so that’s the significant difference. Thank you. That really wasn’t at all clear. Thanks for the quick and spot on response.
