I’ve got my website with cloudflare and recently I’ve noticed the style sheet is not loading on first load of the website, so it needs to be refreshed to load properly. It seems to be a caching issue but I can’t work out how to solve it.

My website speed is also incredibly slow on Google website speed test too!

Any help would be much appreciated!

It looks to be an issue with Autoptimize and minification. First, see if you can disable Autoptimize minification (you can enable Minification in the Cloudflare dashboard’s Speed section).

Then purge your website, Cloudflare, and browser cache.

If that doesn’t fix it, see if completely disabling Autoptimize fixes it. I don’t think it will come to this, as I believe others on Cloudflare use Autoptimize without issue.

As for speed, I don’t know if you have a Page Cache on your site, but it’s the HTML that’s slowing things down once Cloudflare caches everything else. a Page Cache should help a lot.

p.s. The site looks spiffy, but it might be nice to slow down the slider a bit.

I suspect it is the rocket loader that is causing this problem. Can you try deactivating the rocket loader for a while and run a test?

As for the website speed, some links and scripts are not reachable. For example:

https://www.123photography.co.uk/wp-content/cache/autoptimize/css/autoptimize_8ae7a47baf71273c84c783288e19cae6.css

https://www.123photography.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/autoptimize/classes/external/js/lazysizes.min.js

This slows down the loading time as the browser keeps on fetching for the resources returning 404 error. This could be related to the autoptimize tool you are probably using on WordPress.

Hi sdayman,

thanks for your advice  I’ll slow the slideshow down to 4 seconds instead of 2

I actually deleted the Autoptimize plugin a while ago…so it seems there are still some files remaining since I removed it. When I try to find those links via FTP access on the website it doesn’t appear to be there?

Any ideas?

Hi Rami,

thank you too.

I’ve turned off Rocket Loader and purged the cache but still seem to be getting the error. Not sure if you get the same?

If I were you, I would try to understand if the problem is from Cloudflare’s end or from WordPress. This will minimize the scope. So, as a first step, you can try deactivating Cloudflare by either using the grey cloud or turning on Development Mode. This way, if the problem persists, you would definitely be sure that it is a WordPress problem and not a Cloudflare problem. If the problem was solved, we know as well that is something we need to fix from CF’s end.

Hi Rami,

thanks for all your help. I’ve tried development mode and cleared the cache in various browsers and I’m still getting the same issue. Therefore I guess it must be a Wordpress issue. Not really sure where to go from here as my website knowledge is pretty basic…

Are those links and scripts that you mentioned before still not reachable?

thanks
Dan

The good news is that my first visit showed no errors.

Layered caching and optimization is my nemesis. I tend to not use any of that at the WordPress level. Only at Server and Cloudflare level. So my WordPress is pure output, and I’ve simplified caching and optimization.

For a real nightmare, try a plugin for Page Cache, and a server that does Full Page Cache, Cloudflare with Cache Everything, and an extended Browser Cache time.

that’s good! It does seem a bit temperamental as sometimes it loads ok and sometimes not. Firefox browser seems to give more issues than Google Chrome or Safari…

So as far you can see the site seems to be working ok?

Some of the links are reachable and some are not. However, the sites loads fine now. It was clearly a WP issue.

I was still getting the problem with the stylesheet not loading on first load of the site…The template developer Organic Themes seem to think it’s Autoptimize that is causing the issues, so I’ve deleted that plugin again.

Are you still getting any errors showing as being caused by Autoptimize? Hopefully not as it’s now been deleted!

When I browsed in private mode, I noticed that the errors are still showing. Here are some:

Hi,

I still seem to be having problems with the CSS not loading on first load of the website. I’ve even removed the Autoptimize plugin and I’m still finding it’s not loading properly. I’ve also deactivated WP Supercache to see if the helps.

Are you still seeing the errors you mentioned before?

Got the website loading on the first hit. Nope, the 404 errors are no longer there.

Thanks Rami,

Yes I moved the website away from Cloudflare and it seems to have solved the issue
