Fix is super easy with a WordPress plugin:

SSL Issue 'Not Fully Secure'

My silver bullet is HTTP headers for CSP. This plugin will do it: With this header: Content-Security-Policy: upgrade-insecure-requests

But combing through your site to replace all http: references is the right way to do it. But, as you said, tedious.
