Transferring a domain registry to Cloudflare - what if registry is already paid until some date in the future?

I have several domains that I would like to transfer to Cloudflare when my wave comes up. They are paid out until late 2019 and 2021.

When I transfer the domains that don’t expire until 2019 to 2021, do I have to pay Cloudflare now or only when it is due for renewal?

By the way, I’m a big fan of your service and have recommended it to a number of people / companies. Easy to use, robust features, reliable… keep up the good work!

You pay now to extend the renewal by at least a year.

ICANN requires that any transfer also extend the expiration date of your domain by at least one year. That’s one year from your current expiration date, not one year from the date of transfer. For example, if you transfer a domain on October 10, 2018, but it expires on March 10, 2019, your new expiration date will be March 10, 2020.

@cs-cf - thank you for the quick response! How much is a 1 year registration with Cloudflare?

Cloudflare charges their cost, so it varies by TLD. Here’s the chart from their announcement.
