As of Jan 10th, our support ticket said “This is still something that the Product Team is still working on, but I do not have an ETA on the release.” Our success team is going to let us know when it becomes available. Definitely a bummer that this does not work.
I see it in the cache rules section now.

Have you tried this yet?
Any news on this? We have really long SWR headers but are only seeing a tiny fraction of traffic actually being revalidated in the background.
this was asked on Discord, if it was still on track for the end of Q1 and they said that it’s actively being developed as we speak, but it likely won’t be done for the end of Q1.
Question: Discord
Answer: 2min 40sec in: Discord
Just asked this in this months discord call. There was no update and “definitely not on track for early Q2”.
Coming soon: asynchronous revalidation with stale-while-revalidate… and we will be bringing this to you in the second half of 2024.
There is a link at the bottom of the blog post to a google form to signup for the beta.
Wish I had found that blog post before wasting a day troubleshooting why its not working.
The docs really should be updated to say its not supported yet, the fact they have this section implies its a working feature Revalidation and request collapsing · Cloudflare Cache (CDN) docs
just the same… they made me crazy testing, as their documentation just say it is already supported, for months and months!!!
is there a page or another conversation that one can monitor to see if and when stale-if-error and stale-while-revalidate are/will be properly implemented?
I was on a call about 2 weeks ago and they said it’s still set for Q3. So hopefully we get true SWR soon.
Glad I came across this issue early enough. I was thinking of using cloudflare as the CDN in my startup but now I will probably go with some other provider.
Any update on when Cloudflare released the SWR? According to this blog: Browser Rendering API GA, rolling out Cloudflare Snippets, SWR, and bringing Workers for Platforms to all users
“…we will be bringing this to you in the second half of 2024.”
2024 almost ends.
Could Cloudflare team tell if it still seriously implement SWR? Alternatively, Cloudflare team could just announce that it would abandon any plan for implementing SWR. So we could move on with understanding that Cloudflare SWR is only working for concurrent request as it explained on Revalidation and request collapsing · Cloudflare Cache (CDN) docs
it is a petty Cloudflare tell us it is working for almost 2 years without success, on a feature which is already present in any decent proxy-cache, as it is a must. We are waiting for it because it is so much useful.
On the Cloudflare Discord, Cloudflare posted another “no ETA” repsonse, on Jan 31.
when do we expect asynchronous revalidation (stale-while-revalidate) native support? Thx!
background revalidation is still on the roadmap, but can’t share any ETA
I predict that stale-while-revalidate
won’t be available this year; I expect it in 2026 at the earliest.
There has been no public estimate since April of last year (when they predicted that the feature would be ready by EOY 2024). I believe that although stale-while-revalidate
is technically “on the roadmap,” nobody’s actively working on it.
If SWR work resumes this year, then we can maybe expect SWR six months after that.
Like many others here, I’ve been eagerly waiting for full stale-while-revalidate support to streamline caching strategies for dynamic content. Delays like this make planning at scale difficult, especially when documentation and reality don’t align. While waiting, I’ve relied on Phonexa to better monitor cache consistency and reduce latency impacts across distributed endpoints. Fingers crossed for a concrete ETA soon.
