Should MX be configured with cloud/proxy off?

My domain is set to use CloudFlare and i’ve added the DNS entries and all that. Site is working but emails are having issues and can only be resolved if I set MX record to bypass CF proxies (orange cloud off)

Is this the proper setting or am I missing something? I thought I can course all traffic thru CF … HTTP, MAIL, FTP, MYSQL, etc

This is correct. Cloudflare only proxies HTTP(S) requests. For emails to work you do need to bypass the proxy
