I’m trying to set up my domain that I bought through this cursed provider with Freehostia. Cloudflare doesn’t allow changing nameservers. What is the correct way of doing it?
What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?
Used my brain, googled for hours, contacted the help bot
What are the steps to reproduce the issue?
Connecting Cloudflare domain to Freehostia hosting
You are informed this prior to purchasing the domain.
Usually you point at your hosting using A/AAAA/CNAME records, but free hosts often require use of their nameservers so if that is the case then you’ll need to transfer the domain registration to another registrar after the 60-day transfer lock period.
No, I wasn’t informed about this.
Unless I’m expected to browse through the full legal documentation to make sure basic and expected features are included before making a simple domain name purchase.
Thanks for your reply but this is ridiculous.
I tried seeing how to refund, but even contacting the sales department is a premium feature - which is also blatantly illegal.
Is there a way around it, or a way to stop the unlock period? What a mistake to but from Cloudflare, never again honestly.
There are exactly 3 sentences on the screen, informing you of a) what you get, b) the renewal price and c) that you cannot change your nameservers. It even starts in bold to make sure you read this.
If you can’t be bothered to read a total of 32 words, that’s exclusively your problem. It’s not like this is hidden in the fine print or some ToS that no one reads.
No, it’s not. Everyone can create support tickets, but domains are non-refundable anyway.
At cost domain registration is a benefit for Cloudflare customers. Cloudflare is not a charity, so why should they sell domains at cost to people that don’t intend to use their services?
You get what you pay for. Cloudflare sells domains at cost, so every support they need to provide is a loss to them. You get ticket support.
It cost almost exactly the same as other providers. It’s not some sort of discounted cheapo service. Namecheap sold the same domain for around 21 dollars for two years, and cloudflare 20? Roughly.
And yes it isn’t on the screen, smartass, because you don’t expect it to be there - this is basic psychology of perception. It’s just another line that nobody reads, because you would expect it to be exactly the same as with all the other providers, making it essentially invisible - except for the most dedicated, as yourself, who surely read every line on a page.
For the record, freehostia has live support for a free service. But you can keep protecting a predatory and shitty business model if you prefer.
Cloudflare sells domains for exactly the same price that they pay themselves. They don’t do discounts, but they also never make a profit selling domains.
Namecheap sells domains cheaper in the first year, but more expensive later on.
First year is cheaper with their promo code, but renewal costs more.
So all companies should provide the exact same service because you expect them to provide the exact same service? That’s an absolutely ridiculous expectation.
Cloudflare’s service deviates from the “standard service” in one central point, and they put it on the screen in bold.
Just out of curiosity, how do you expect them to inform you about the difference of their service if you don’t read the text on the screen?
You’re voicing the same ridiculous expectation again: One company offers live support for free, so all companies should do it.
You can pick the best traits of all companies and complain that not every company conforms with whatever you picked, but you will only set yourself up for disappointment.
In reality, most companies have different traits in which they excel, and you should pick whichever offer you like best. But that obviously requires you to read the offer, maybe some reviews etc.
