Sending emails not working after setting up the domain with your dns

What is the name of the domain?

teacher.cl

What is the error number?

The SMTP of my thunderbird client doesn’t seem to reach the smtp

What is the error message?

Sending of the Message failed. Sending of the message failed because the outgoing smtp server timed out . Try again

What is the issue you’re encountering

Outgoing mail is not going out

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I have little knowledge about servers, dns, etc… I just added teacher.cl to use the dns. I also have
englishnow.it on cloudflare and have no problem whatsoever sending or receiving emails.
Both teacher.cl and englishnow.it are hosted in the same web host.
I tried to match teacher.cl’s records to englishow’s but I just couldn’t match them. What gave no waring icon
in englishnow.it showed a warning icon in teacher.cl.
What I would like to know is : Is there anyway that the dns of teacher.cl be used just for the website so I can go ahead and just use
my regular smtp server?
I know you send a lot of links to read a lot of information. But as someone who has only some idea of this,
It is a bit overwhelming. So also if I’m not able to just leave the dns working for the website, I’d rather r
remove everything and forget about teacher.cl being on cloudflare and keep englishnow.it

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

just try to send an email I guess

Set the Proxy status to Unproxied (:grey:) / DNS-only.

That is mandatory for any DNS record(s) that are related to email traffic.

It sounds like the “Server Name” you have configured in Thunderbird, under “Outbound Server (SMTP)”, equals your domain name, “teacher.cl”?

As that one is currently set to Proxied (:orange:), it will not work, as the Cloudflare Proxy takes care of web traffic, and not email traffic.

You can create an additional DNS record, such as e.g. “smtp.teacher.cl”, “mail.teacher.cl”, or even something else, that is pointing towards the same IP address, but with the Proxy status set to Unproxied (:grey:) / DNS-only.

That way, you can separate the SMTP / Mail traffic (on e.g. “smtp.teacher.cl” and/or “mail.teacher.cl”), from your web traffic (on e.g. “teacher.cl” and/or “www.teacher.cl”).

Once you have made a choice of the new record, you will then re-configure Thunderbird to use the new (and Unproxied (:grey:) / DNS-only) record, instead of just the naked domain, as the “Server Name”.

That way you can keep Cloudflare in front of your website.

Thanks so much I’m going to try that and see if it works.

Thanks for trying to help. It just didn’t work and it’s not worth the hassle. I’m returning everything to my provider’s dns and smtp wich is easier for me. Hope one day things will really set up automatically on Cloudflare.

Best,
Rick

You’re welcome.

Would you be able to share the steps you took, as well as eventual new error code(s)/message(s) you see, and so forth?

Even with one single provider, - depending on whether your stuff is hosted in Europe, North America or Asia, that could be three different sets of DNS records to configure from your end, even though it is only one single provider.

There is unfortunately no single set of “magic”, that will just work for everyone.

If there was, I believe Cloudflare (and many others) would have done something like that years ago.

There will always be some kind of hassle when you’re changing out stuff (e.g. switching DNS provider, email provider, web hosting provider, …), which you cannot really avoid, if you’re going to change something.

The hassle (like e.g. in this case) is normally just temporary though, - once you’ve got it all right, it’s most often going to be working just fine, up until next time you decide, that you’re going to change the provider for that specific thing, for some reason.

If it works for you this way, and it’s easier for you at the same time, I’m happy to hear that you’ve found the final solution to the problem.

If you wish to try again at some point, or otherwise have issues with using Cloudflare, feel free to post again.
