Salesforce Experience - Error 1016 when setting CNAME

I am trying to map my DNS to a Salesforce experience site. my configuration for the CNAME is
Name= . com
Target = mydomain . com. . salesforce .live .com in alignment with their docs.
Proxy = on

When I save, the site gives a 1016 and says that the CNAME can’t be resolved.

Has anyone set this up in Cloudflare?

Where in the docs did you find this?

The docs I found have a completely different target.

For example, to add www.example.com as a domain in a production org, if your 18-character org ID is 00d000000000000maq, your domain’s internal Salesforce CNAME is www.example.com.00d000000000000maq.live.siteforce.com.
