Root Domain Delegation Outside of Cloudflare

I want my root domain to remain delagated outside of Cloudflare with my own hosting provider, while my subdomain is delagated within Cloudflare. Is this possible? If so, how would I set this up?

I’ve never seen it successfully done in that direction, and I’m pretty sure it’s not possible. Cloudflare will ignore your entire domain if you’re not using Cloudflare name servers. It’s possible to delegate out a subdomain, though.

Is there a specific reason you can’t switch your name servers to Cloudflare?

Hey @sdayman,

Thanks for your quick reply. I have my main website on my root domain so I don’t want to screw anything up that I’m not too familiar with doing. Plus I’m paying for the hosting service, don’t want it just sitting there.

Most hosting services support either a CNAME or give you a dedicated IP address, this would work if you used Cloudflare as your DNS.

Otherwise, you can look into CNAME setup where any records you want Cloudflare protection on (proxied :orange:) you just create a CNAME to Cloudflare at your real DNS provider.

Thanks @Judge for sharing these articles. I will take a look at them.

Keep in mind that CNAME setups require Business or Enterprise plans.
