Retrieve ghost DNS entry from previous records

What is the name of the domain?

What is the issue you’re encountering

404 on www. version of site

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

  • Contacted Kinsta

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

DNS records

I did not fill the issue as I was supposed to. Adding context here:

  • I added a domain via Kinsta (Hosting with CF Enabled)
  • The normal version of the domain was pointing correctly but the www. version did not (was poiting to a 404)
  • It took more than 7 hours for Kinsta and CF to manage to solve this and the information we got is that there was a ghost entry somewhere in CF.

Nor the previous host or the client are using CF so the record should be quite old.

The problem is that the client (high profile) needs more information on the matter and we do not seem to find a proper route to track down what the old entry was (were it was pointing or anything we can report back)

The issue eventualy got fixed and we did add a custom TXT record to prove the ownership of the domain but Kinsta could not provide any other information on the matter.

Kinsta leverages Cloudflare tools. Either Kinsta fixed the issue and can tell you how they did it or they opened a support ticket with Cloudflare and can tell you how Cloudflare did it.

They did open a ticket with Cloudflare and they fixed it.

My question is how can I learn what the old entry was so that I can communicate it to my client.

Things have escalated to management level and they require a full report.

I have tried sending an email to [email protected] but it is deactivated.

As @cscharff said, you’ll need to go through Kinsta for details.

In this case Cloudflare’s customer is Kinsta, Cloudflare won’t give a third party that contacts them any information about their customer’s account.
