Hi!
I registered a domain through Cloudflare. I have hosting through Namecheap. I need to connect my domain to a Wordpress Multisite. The basics (A record, Cname, verification txt records) aren’t working. I’m getting a 404 error page. Namecheap wants me to change my nameservers to them but that’s not an option.
Greetings,
Thank you for asking.
May I ask if you have added those DNS records under the DNS tab of Cloudflare dashboard for your domain name?
If so, I’d suggest you to switch them from to
(DNS-only), wait for few minutes, then re-try the “validation” or “verification” process.
Just in case, sharing a helpful tutorial which includes step-by-step instructions how to:
Furthermore, if you recently registered a domain name and/or changed your domain nameservers, the regular DNS propagation time usually takes up to 24-48 hours to complete, so we might have to wait a little more time.
Could you share your domain name here so we could lookup for existing A/CNAME/TXT records if they show up?
May I ask, can you share a screenshot of this 404 page you’re getting?
Thank you for responding!
- The DNS info was entered into Cloudflare
- I registered the the domain over a month ago.
- The domain is PixelatedScotch.stream
- I apologize apparently it’s Pixelatedscotch.stream/wp-admin showing the e404, the main page is showing the index. So it has in fact connected to my hosting, it appears the WP subsite is the issue.
Thank you for feedback.
So, it was working before you started using Cloudflare, or?
May I ask if you manually/individually installed WordPress or someone from NameCheap did it for you?
Yes, it seems like the “www” or “public_html” directory is empty as far as it lists or tries to list out what does it include (any files, or so) in a list tree while I open your Website
Yep, as seems there is no “wp-admin” directory to locate it. A common error in that case.
My best guess is, if you’re runnning WordPress from a sub-directory or similar setup, I’d suggest to check this either with a web hosting provider or the .htaccess
file.

I have not bought any domain from the Cloudflare, how is your experience, would you like to share your experience as I’m thinking to buy one from the Cloudflare as a test?
@dave_exp all good, except the only thing you have to keep in mind while purchasing a domain name at Cloudflare Registrar is if your domain name is registered at Cloudflare Registrar, unfortunately, currently you cannot change the nameservers if you use Cloudflare as a domain registrar. Currently, Cloudflare Registrar only lets you use Cloudflare name servers. If you want to use external name servers, you’d have to transfer your domain registration to a different registrar:
6.1 in the Domain Registration Agreement states that you cannot change the nameservers:
6.1 Nameservers . Registrant agrees to use Cloudflare’s nameservers. REGISTRANT ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES THAT IT MAY NOT CHANGE THE NAMESERVERS ON THE REGISTRAR SERVICES, AND THAT IT MUST TRANSFER TO A THIRD PARTY REGISTRAR IF IT WISHES TO CHANGE NAMESERVERS.
Unfortunately, only the possible solutin which I can see from the ToS of Cloudflare Registrar and your case: Transfer out and use different domain registar.
You can certainly transfer out after 60 days as per ICANN requirements.
