Redirected domains

What is the name of the domain?

What is the issue you’re encountering

Simple question: Confirm that if domains are REDIRECTED, then they do NOT have to be hosted on Cloudflare?

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

Simple question: Confirm that if domains are REDIRECTED, then they do NOT have to be hosted on Cloudflare? (only the primary domain that is the redirection target)

Just what to confirm before i do something stupid and have to redo.

To use Cloudflare Rules to redirect a domain, only the redirecting domain has to be on Cloudflare and proxied.

The target/destination domain can be anywhere – does not have to be on Cloudflare.

For example, let’s say you’re redireting from example.com to example.net.

Only example.com has to be on Cloudflare and proxied.

The destination domain example.net does not have to use Cloudflare at all.

Re-reading your question, I’m thinking this is the scenario you’re contemplating:

  • You have an active domain on Cloudflare with a website. Perhaps this is the freedom-tshirts.com you provided.

  • You have some new/dormant domain that you want to redirect to the existing site.

  • And you’re wondering if this other domain has to be on Cloudflare before you can redirect it to the existing site that’s already on Cloudflare.

The answer to this question depends on where you want to do the redirection.

– If you want to use Cloudflare to do the redirection, then this new domain also has to be active on Cloudflare and proxied.

– Alternatively, you may be able to do the redirection at the place where you registered the domain (if they have such a feature). In that case, the new domain that’s to be redirected does not have to be on Cloudflare.

Thank you for all your many helpful comments; however it seems you totally misunderstood my simpole question?

i will try to be clearer.

If i redirect a domain (in cPanel) to a different domain
eg blue-hat.com to red-hat.com

my assumption is that i do NOT then have to add that redirected domain, blue-hat.com, in Cloudflare - only he primary domain, red-hat.com

kind regards

An mentor of mine once told me to never call something “simple” or “easy” when I can’t figure it out myself and must ask someone for help

I covered this above already.

If you’re redirecting the domain in cPanel (and it’s working for you), then there’s no need to do anything else anywhere again. In this case, cPanel is doing the redirection and that’s where it ends.

The important thing to bear in mind is that the redirection can only be done at one place, and not at multiple places.

But you have the choice of where to do your redirection: in Cloudflare OR in cPanel… and that choice will dictate what steps to take.

If this is still not clear, please provide actual domains you’re redirecting from and to, so I can look it up to see the current setup and advice you as to the best approach to take.

Standing by.
