What is the issue you’re encountering
Rate limiting rules being applied to the website even though no rate limiting rules are configured
What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?
- Initially, this error appeared for our QA department when they are running automated tests, but the errors were coming from Kinsta where the page is hosted - Kinsta was doing the rate limiting
- Reached out to Kinsta support who increased the rate limit which resolved the issue
- The issue reappeared and rate limiting is logged on Cloudflare
- However, Kinsta is no longer showing errors for rate limiting, meaning the issue is likely on Cloudflare side
Was the site working with SSL prior to adding it to Cloudflare?
Yes
What is the current SSL/TLS setting?
Full
What are the steps to reproduce the issue?
- When 429 errors were initially shown, I checked Cloudflare to make sure it is not blocking the traffic
- Confirmed that, for the specific IP belonging to our QA Engineer, the Action taken was Skip, as configured in our custom rule for any traffic that includes a specific bearer token, which is good
- Checked logs on Kinsta and saw errors related to rate limiting
- Contacted Kinsta and asked for this limit to be raised, which they did for the next 3 days (until Friday) so that we can test
- QA was no longer getting any errors related to rate limiting, but they were getting different errors now, so they wanted to troubleshoot it
- After a few hours, rate limiting issue reappeared
- Kinsta logs are no longer showing any errors for the specific IP of the QA Engineer
- Cloudflare is showing 429 errors for this traffic and states that it applies a rate limiting rule
- When checking this log details, the rule name is “Unavailable”
