I’m considering transferring all my domains over to CF but I have 2 questions…
I know it says CF won’t profit from domains but I’d like to see a price list for Registrations, Renewals and Transfers (in and out if applicable) for each TLD. Where can I find this as not even the almighty Google seems to want to show me.
Some of my domains use my own nameservers so I only want to transfer the tag, is this possible? I can only see the option to transfer domains after adding them in the control panel which I don’t want to do as I won’t be using it for some domains. I’m worried if I did follow this process it would change the nameservers over to CFs once you have the tag.
Registration is always billed at cost. I’m surprised there’s no price list, since the domain search knows how much each one will be, but you can use the domain search (in the dashboard under Register Domains) to see prices.
It’s at cost, though, because it’s a service for people using Cloudflare’s DNS. You can’t use outside nameservers with a domain registered through Cloudflare. (You can still use the domain with Cloudflare’s services, of course.)
It has been stated that some TLDs prohibit Registrars from publishing the wholesale price for domains, and this is why there is no published list. @Judge used to publish the prices on GitHub, it’s out of date but probably mostly still valid.
I had previously written to support a few days ago but not received a reply so started this ticket. I have received a reply now saying they don’t publish price lists currently but you can see the price before purchasing. However, i’m not convinced i’ll get a renewal notification of the price before they charge me. There’s something fishy about this I don’t like as it’s not transparent.
As for the nameservers, they state you must use their nameservers. This is just bizarre, I have my own nameservers and don’t want to use theirs for all my domains.
I am not sure we agree on the meaning of transparent.
We do not know if a given registry service is going to change prices downtheline, but we do know and what is fully transparent is that Cloudflare Registrar is a no-markup registry service. In my case, I paid $6 for a domain where another registrar wanted $18. It’s super transparent to me that I saved $12.
You may have saved $12 on one domain, but that does sound expensive $18 for a domain that you got for $6, i’m sure there’s plenty of others providers out there that would have also charged much less as well. There’s lots of great registrar’s out there with competitive prices.
But my personal issue isn’t the price… I know Cloudflare say they don’t charge anything more than they pay, but what’s to stop them changing their policy in 1, 2 or 3 years time when my domains are with them and charging me more?
I don’t care what it costs as long as it’s reasonable, I just want to personally see a price list per TLD for registrations, renewals, and transfers in/out.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter as my main gripe isn’t that, if I can’t use my own nameservers for some of my my domains (which is a must) then I can’t transfer the domains. And I’m not going to split up domains between providers when my current provider is also very cheap.
That’s just my view that i’m entitled to and giving you feedback why I’ve decided to keep all my domains where they are. Take it as you will
