I purchased a new domain from Cloudflare (my first ever one) and my payment went through but Cloudflare said error. The domain is now on my dashboard but says it is not active and that I need to update the Nameservers and DNS even though it is a new domain I bought from Cloudflare?!
Registrar issues require a Registrar ticket with Support
Hi Laudian, I have already created a ticket with no response yet, the number is 01337145. It is listing different nameservers but I have no idea why as have never bought a domain before and I did pay for this one?! Very very confused, appreciate any further guidance you can give.
The registrar for that domain is not cloudflare, check here, ICANN Lookup, registrar appears to be namecheap and it looks like the domain was registered yesterday with namecheap → WHEN: Tue Jan 07 08:05:21 PST 2025
I see you added the domain (zone) to your cloudflare dashboard and at the moment it’s awaiting a nameserver change at your domain registrar. Have them remove the current nameservers and replace with only the two shown here, https://dash.cloudflare.com/?to=/:account/:zone/dns
I do not see any paid subscription for domain registrar nor any other services in your account.
I’d start with the nameserver change at namecheap and then let us know once that has been done.
I purchased the domain on namecheap this afternoon as couldn’t work out another way round the issue. The money was taken from my account and as the domain appeared on my dashboard I assumed it was halfway through being purchased… quite confused on this still!
However I have just changed the nameservers to the ones you linked to, hopefully this works. Is there anything else I need to do right now?
Thank you for the update and sorry for the issues. If the purchase was started on cloudflare and did not go through, the system is very good about refunding/not charging you (if any issues with that, let us know).
I see the nameserver change and that change has propagated. At the moment, the domain shows an NXDOMAIN error as there are no DNS records. You’ll want to add a DNS A (for address) record with the value of the IP address of your origin server. Your hosting provider can tell you that IP address. Once you track down that IP, follow the steps here to add the record, Manage DNS records · Cloudflare DNS docs

Finally, we’re here to help if you have questions, just let us know.
Thank you - this is what I have heard from NameCheap: Per my check there is no issue on the domain side, the Nameserver is propagating correctly. It may take 24-48 hours for DNS changes to take effect. If you wish to host the domain on Cloudflare, please contact your service provider to get the IP value and add host record for the domain.
Per my check, the domain is pointed to third-party Nameservers.
This means that the DNS zone and all DNS host records (including A/CNAME/MX/TXT records) can be managed only from the side of your DNS/hosting provider. You might want to contact your current DNS/hosting provider to check the DNS records.
Does the above mean that I should wait and see if DNS moved over? Sorry I am a bit of a novice and not quite sure what I need to change!
I am an artist so am going to be building a website and wanted a custom domain for this But didn’t think it would be this confusing to buy a domain and have it set up thank you for your continuing help!
Oh this makes complete sense! So Cloudflare at the moment hosts my domain but there is no DNS as there is no website or anything to link it to, and then when i build my website I will move it over from their hosting onto Cloudflare?
You don’t “move it from their hosting”. The company will still host the website, Cloudflare only manages DNS (which is like a phone book) and performs services on top (like caching).
For now, I’d recommend you just built your website. If you have any questions when it comes to connecting the domain to the website, we can certainly help with that.
If the domain is new and there was not a site already accessible, I suspect there are no records to move. If there were records to move over, our scan would have seen them and done that for you.
The site won’t be hosted at Cloudflare, it is hosted somewhere else. Do you know where that is? If not, your web designer will. Contact the hosting provider and ask them the IP address for your site and create an A record with that IP as the content for the record.
Ah, just seeing the earlier replies from @Laudian and all good advice, did not se them before the above comments. I guess my question at this point is as you are creating the site now, have you identified where you want to host it?
No worries at all! I haven’t decided where I will be building the website yet. I think potentially Squarespace, would that be the host? or would I be able to host with Cloudflare? Or will namecheap where I bought the domain be the host?
As long as the hosting provider supports using third party (cloudflare) nameservers, they are a viable option. I can’t really recommend one over another, I’ve used a number of them over a period of years and each seems to have advantages & disadvantages. I know some on this forum are much more vocal about their points of view and I’d defer to them.
