Proxy suddenly caused errors opening web pages

I’ve been using Cloudflare proxied DNS entries along with Cloudflare origin SSL certificate for a couple of years. Suddenly, for one of my domains, browsers started returning: “redirected you too many times”. Turning off proxy and using DNS only along with my own SSL certificate works fine. Have not made any recent changes to our server.

I have second domain with Cloudflare with it’s own proxied site on the same server (IIS) and it’s working properly:

Regarding the domain with the problem, Cloudflare states:

I have checked the error logs for the domain on Cloudflare for the last 24 hours and can see that 522 errors are occurring, which means we are unable to connect to your origin:

I have checked the network path from an example location where we saw the errors and I can see that there is some packet loss outside of our network reaching your origin server:

A 522 and a redirect are two different issues. The former means your server was not accessible to the proxies and you may want to check your firewall.

The latter typically means you have an insecure encryption mode on Cloudflare. What’s your encryption mode?

THANK YOU! Somehow SSL was switched to Flexible from Full(Strict) and switching it back solved the issue. I don’t know how that happened, I wasn’t working with the Cloudflare site until errors were reported.

Cloudflare said there were 522 errors, but I did not see that, I only saw the “too many redirects” message in the browser.

Maybe the redirects were due to my site attempting to redirect from http to https while SSL was not set properly.

Precisely, such an insecure encryption mode is typically why you get such redirects.

The 522 may be also related, if your server is primarily configured for HTTPS.

I’d also check the audit log for why the encryption changed, as that should not change on its own. And if some third party service has access via the API, you may want to revoke that access.
