Proposal for Cloudflare VPS or Root-Server Hosting Service

Feedback

Dear Cloudflare Team,

I am writing to suggest an idea that could enhance Cloudflare’s service offerings and provide significant benefits to Cloudflare user base.

As you know, Cloudflare has established itself as a leader in internet security and performance, providing powerful DDoS protection, CDN services, and a wide range of security solutions to protect websites and applications. With your infrastructure already being widely utilized by millions of websites, I believe that Cloudflare has the potential to expand into a new domain—offering VPS or root-server hosting services directly to users.

Why Cloudflare VPS or Root-Servers would be valuable:

Enhanced Performance:
Given that Cloudflare operates one of the largest and fastest CDNs globally, integrating VPS or root-server hosting into your offerings would ensure that customers benefit from high-performance infrastructure backed by Cloudflare’s global network. This would significantly improve both website and application performance.

Superior Security:
As Cloudflare is renowned for its robust security solutions, including DDoS protection, web application firewalls, and bot mitigation, integrating these protections directly into managed VPS or root-server offerings would provide users with unparalleled security without the need for complex configurations or additional third-party services.

Game Server Protection:
Many game server administrators face significant challenges with DDoS attacks, which can severely disrupt gameplay and result in financial losses. Currently, solutions to mitigate such attacks are often expensive and difficult to implement for the average user. Cloudflare’s reputation for handling large-scale DDoS attacks would make it an ideal choice for gamers who need guaranteed uptime and stable performance. A VPS or root-server hosting service from Cloudflare could be a game-changer, providing a hassle-free and powerful solution for gaming communities.

Ease of Use:
One of the key advantages Cloudflare offers is ease of integration and management through its intuitive platform. By offering VPS or root-server hosting with built-in security features (like automatic DDoS protection, firewall management, etc.), you would simplify the user experience. This would be especially appealing to those who may not have the technical expertise to configure complex firewall rules or deal with server security manually.

Cost Efficiency:
While the current market offers VPS or root-servers, many of the solutions that come with integrated security features are either expensive or require advanced configuration. Cloudflare, with its existing infrastructure, could provide these services at a competitive price point while offering higher reliability and security than many current providers.

In conclusion, I believe that Cloudflare’s expansion into VPS or root-server hosting, backed by your excellent security suite, would be a natural and highly beneficial extension of your services. It would not only empower businesses, developers, and gamers with a secure, reliable, and high-performance hosting solution but also position Cloudflare as an even more indispensable part of the internet infrastructure.

I would be happy to discuss this idea further or provide additional details if needed.

Best regards,
yahya

That’s going to cost Cloudflare a lot of :money_with_wings: :moneybag: if Cloudflare decides to take such move further to provide even Web hosting service among everything already it does for free of charge.

Take a look at Hetzner. New hardware, cheap, reliable

Possible already with Cloudflare Spectrum which can protect game servers from DDOS attacks:

To add onto this, the Cloudflare edge network is designed primarily for many lightweight, fast edge services. (Nearly) every service runs on every server in Cloudflare’s network, and so the network is designed to have many servers running lighter-weight workloads (see, for example, https://blog.cloudflare.com/introducing-cloudflare-workers/, where they discuss why they use V8 Isolates instead of VMs).

If they were to provide VPS services, this would likely require a redesign of a significant portion of their network. Plus, as @fritex contributed above, there are many VPS providers currently operating so it wouldn’t really make sense for Cloudflare to enter into an already-competitive market without a good motivation to.

I apologize for the late reply because of being busy

I’m unsure of Cloudflare’s costs, but I’m confident this could become a valuable revenue stream. Currently, I only use their free services, with hosting costs paid directly to providers.

From experience, most hosting providers (e.g., Contabo, Hetzner, Netcup, Vultr, EUGameHost) struggle to handle large DDoS attacks. For instance, EUGameHost claims 12TB DDoS protection, yet their servers failed after an 800GB attack. The only reliable provider I’ve found is OVH, but even they require skilled configuration for optimal protection, including external and internal firewalls to block unwanted or repetitive connections effectively.

As someone who greatly values Cloudflare, I consider their services unparalleled. While their focus is on large enterprises, a project like this could generate significant revenue without compromising their reputation. I’m confident they would execute it with the innovation and excellence they’re known for.

I may not have extensive expertise in this area, but I firmly believe there’s a solution for everything. One potential approach could be to develop this as a standalone or secondary project and integrate it with their main site later.

Cloudflare is renowned for its innovative solutions and forward-thinking approach to web development. That’s why I’m suggesting this idea—I know they are consistently exploring and building groundbreaking technologies in this field.
