What is the issue you’re encountering

Played around with R2 storage lost my entire website, website down

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I thought i’d play around with R2 storage to see what it was like now i’ve lost my entire website, my website is down and i can’t revert back to the working version, probably never going to play about with R2 storage ever again never knew it would update and change my DNS records playing around with R2 Storage, never came with any real warnings it was going to do this to me.

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

Created a bucket and tried using settings to troubleshoot getting it tow work, now my website is down and i can’t get it back online

Screenshot of the error

If you created a “custom domain” for the bucket that matches an existing DNS record (such as your apex domain or www) then Cloudflare will create a DNS record for the hostname, replacing any that exists, to point to the bucket.

Remove the custom hostname from R2 and restore the DNS record you had there originally manually.

I’ve already tried to restore, it won’t allow me to delete the R2 bucket, there are no such options of restore on cloudflares control panel, i’d love if there was that option, there is no restore button, and it will not allow me to delete the bucket. I don’t know if i created a custom domain i’m new to R2 Buckets i’ll probably never use this bucket feature in the future knowing it’ll do this to me without warning. I don’t know what it did, my website is down.

You have a DNS record for www but not the apex domain so I guess www is a CNAME to the apex (hence the 1016 error as that’s missing).

Since there is no DNS record for the apex domain the bucket is not affecting that so just go and create it again.

As for the bucket, does it tell you why you can’t delete it? You need to delete all the objects in the bucket before you can delete it.

Ok i deleted the bucket my website is still down, what happened why did messing with options in the bucket change my DNS records, it should at least tell me it’s going to do this, these changes can take 48hrs to troubleshoot, very annoying cloudflare doesn’t tell you they’re going to change my DNS records for experimneting with an R2 bucket. Now i have no idea what it has changed, deleting my bucket changed nothing my website is still down.

Likely you set your domain name as a custom domain for the bucket. All you need to do is put the DNS record for the apex domain back as it was. If you don’t know what it was, get the information from your web host.

You can see what actions you did in the audit log…

I’ve head of A Records before i’ve not heard of apex domain before, what is an apex domain with cloudflare, the answers i’m being provided are raising more questions.

The apex domain is funnystash.com, which has no DNS record. Add a record for @ to your DNS to represent it.

(I’m assuming that www is a CNAME to funnystash.com which is why it gives a 1016 error)

R2 bucket system makes itself to appear external outsource so for it to start changing internal settings is beyond irritating. I have no idea what it changed, i have no idea what it updated, i haven’t looked at my DNS records in years, so for cloudflare to just start updating and changing settings without it telling me to make backsups i never change is beyond extremly annoying

It will only have changed the DNS record if you ask it to use your domain name as a custom hostname, in which case it needs to change the DNS. Did you do that? If not, that’s not the reason your DNS record is missing.

Whatever the cause, just put the record back. It may be in the audit log if you deleted the record. Otherwise, ask your host for it.

(As I say, I’m assuming the CNAME for www points to the domain, but you’ve not confirmed that yet)

I don’t know what cloudflare did when i tried to setup my R2 Bucket i just changed a few settings to try and get it working now my entire website is down, i don’t know what cloudflare changed, and there’s no button that will allow me to restore. A little annoying that changes that take 48hrs doesn’t come with any real warnings to backup

They don’t, DNS changes take effect almost instantly on Cloudflare and the TTL for proxied records is only 5 minutes.

You don’t know what you did so I can’t tell you exactly what happened. I’ve explained what may have happened and how to fix it. I suggest you just add the record back as that’s the only way to get your site back up.

I don’t know how they were before as cloudflare didn’t tell me to backup anything as they should have, now everything is down and i’ve lost my website now i’ll need to revert everything all cause i wanted to see what all this stupid cloudflare bucket nonsense was and now i’m finding out it’s a snake pit

My webhosts are useless they can’t tell you anything, it’s like having a conversation with a tree, spent 2hrs with them one day with them being unable to understand the concept of basic .htaccess Rewrite Rules

They will at least know the IP address to use for your site.

If the site is still on Hostinger, an IP address for the site of 157.173.213.241 from 8 months ago is here (it may have changed since then)…

I know how to setup cloudflare with my website but changes take 48hrs, cloudflare changing DNS settings without backup warnings is beyond lame. Cloudflare forcing me to wipe my entire settings with my webhost instead of any real warning sign is beyond lame

I’m still knowhere closer to actually finding out what cloudflare actually done to me for switching a few setting in the bucket area.

I understand you did something and the result wasn’t as you expected so you are frustrated, but your site could have been back up an hour ago. I can’t keep repeating myself so I’ll leave it there.

What went wrong here? Is my DNS Jeopardized by the R2 bucket somehow, no point on me revertting everything if R2 buckets have Jeopardized my account
