Not working with Battle.net/Heroes of the Storm

Sorry if I’m skipping some forum rules, just wanted to post this quickly. Didn’t find it in the search results.

1.1.1.1, when set up through my router, seems to work fine with every website I’ve tried via Chrome, but doesn’t work with the battle.net app when playing Heroes of the Storm.

This battle.net forum indicates others are having the same issue: Heroes of the Storm Forums

Switching back to Google’s DNS lets me connect again.

Thanks for taking the time to reach out and let us know about the problem. I’ll try installing the game tonight so I can try to reproduce it. Judging by that thread, is it fair to say it’s an intermittent issue? Or is there a reliable way to get the “YOU WERE DISCONNECTED FROM BLIZZARD SERVICES” error?

Yes, I personally was getting it intermittently.

At first I assumed it was it was a problem with battle.net because it would work one day but not the next.

Also, Blizzard’s other games like StarCraft continued to work. Very strange. Maybe something to do with how they load balance that game? I’m not sure how that stuff works.

Thanks for looking into it amart!

I just wanted to give you an update here that I’ve so far been unable to reproduce the failure you’ve described. Would you be able to provide me (privately) with a packet capture of these failures? That would be the quickest way to determine what’s going wrong here.

Sure. How should I capture the packet? I’m on Windows 10.

You can install wireshark and have it start recording before you launch the game. Please keep in mind that by default this will record all internet traffic. I’d highly recommend using a capture filter like “port 53 and not arp” to ensure only DNS information is being recorded.

edit: Dropped a very crucial “not” from the filter.

Hey amart,

I ran into this problem today and found this thread. I have capture, how can I get it to you?

Thanks.

That’s great to hear! I’ll send you a private message with my email address.

Thanks so much for the packet capture, @pita0017! That’s a lot of help!

It’s showing us that you’re seeing an NXDOMAIN response for us-hero.logon.battle.net. Could you visit 1.1.1.1 — the Internet’s Fastest, Privacy-First DNS Resolver (from the location/internet connection you normally play Heroes of the Storm from) and share the link that’s generated? That will tell us which Cloudflare datacenter you’re reaching, which will help us track down the source of the problem.

Here you go.

Good news! Our DNS team believes they have a fix in place for this issue. @pita0017 or @user422 would you mind testing and letting us know if you’re still seeing interruptions?

I’m using Cloudflare DNS now. If I run into the issue again I will let you know.

Thanks for your help.

Awesome!

Yes, I’ll let you know if it happens again. I’ve been following this thread, but I haven’t been playing HOTS too much lately so I haven’t seen it occur since I last posted.

Thanks @amart
