Nameserver again!

What is the issue you’re encountering

Guidance for my case of updating nameservers

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

Read documentation and blogs, still confused.

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

Nameservers

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

Here is my situation.

  1. Domain registered with Webcentral in Australia
  2. Website will be hosted India (have 4 nameservers from the hosting provider)
  3. CF dashboard has my domain as not active. I can see the 2 nameservers from CF.
Problem, where do I update the nameservers and which ones to be updated where
as I have 2 sets of nameservers.
    Many thanks for the guidance.

Don’t know how to edit post so just to add, I also have O365 nameservers entered in the domain registrar portal, which i believe I do not need to touch!

If you want to setup Cloudflare for your domain, you need to update the given nameservers (2 nameservers from CF) at your registrar that’s:

Here’s the specific doc:

Thanks neiljay. Need to clarify one thing, this is a new website that has not been pushed out to internet as yet. So, from your note, just updating CF NS on my domain registrar will work and the website will be reachable!
I somehow have a gap in my understanding of how the propagation will work because I cannot seem to understand the discovery process as we have got no way to connect the hosting location to the rest of the world. I hope I am explaining the dilema properly!

Posting a snip from the Registrar DNS setting page. Basically, I need to remove and add the ‘A’ records with CF NS and lave the rest alone.

Hosting provider will provide the IP address that needs to be entered in Cloudflare DNS. What Cloudflare provides the nameservers that needs to be placed at the Registrar. As you’ve shown the snap, you cannot replace nameservers with the A record. From your panel, you need to find out the default ns records and replace with the CF ones.

Thanks neiljay, this really helps. To clarify the snip did not show the full picture so I am going to post a few pictures that may help all with the same issues in understanding the steps that I had.

  1. Delete the A records from the hosting provider. Replace with NS from CF.

  1. Add NS records (or IP addresses) from hosting provider to CF dashboard

And then the link should be completed between Cloudflare, Domain registrar, Hosting provider.
Thanks for your assistance.

Overall I did not find this linkage between the different entities during my searching of the forum so did bit of write up that would help clarify the steps. If they are not correct, please let us know the right way to get this working. Cheers.

The ip address that is provided by the hosting provider needs to be placed at the Cloudflare DNS.

Again, it’s ip address; not the ns records!

As of now, you’ve not replaced the ns records received from Cloudflare at the Registrar. Here, you may see the propagated record:

Confirming again that I need to delete the ‘A’ records containing IP addresses at the registrar portal and add Cloudflare Nameservers there. Then add Hosting providers IP address in the CF dashboard. Sorry if it seems repetitive but I am clearly not as tech savvy as others, but I do have a method, and it seems to be getting better  Please don’t close the topic for the next few days as I will come back and confirm the status of this work. Cheers.

Update found the section in registrar to update CF NS!

So apologies I was looking at the incorrect section to update NS records! Let’s wait for the records to propagate!

And the DNS checker has confirmed that records have been updated! One step done! Just waiting for CF dashboard to say it is active as it is still sitting in pending!

Well, congrats! I see the site is now using Cloudflare.

Hi neiljay, many thanks for your assistance. I had to take the IP details down as the IP provided was pointing to another website! :person_facepalming:

So just waiting to get the correct IP addresses to enter again!
