Moving Domain Registrar and DNS Hosting

Currently, Godaddy is both my Domain Registrar and my DNS hosting provider. I’d like to change both of these to Cloudflare.

My domain is used for

  • custom email domain which is hosted on Microsoft Outlook.
  • to obtain Let’s Encrypt certificates for internal web servers
  • DNS record for an internet-facing SSL VPN server

I feel like I’m in a chicken \ egg situation. Which do I move first? DNS or Domain Registrar?

I’d greatly appreciate any tips!

Thank you!

You have to move DNS first. Cloudflare won’t let you transfer a domain registration unless it’s using Cloudflare nameservers.

Thanks for the tip sdayman.

I’ve updated my DNS servers on GoDaddy DNS to include the 2 Cloudflare NS servers. I am unable to remove the 2 GoDaddy DNS.

My Cloudflare domain is still in a Pending state.

It appears that GoDaddy has processed the name server changes by CF is showing this message on my overview page and I still have not received an email stating my CF account is active.

Should I sit tight and continue waiting?

Thanks!

Cloudflare will only become active after you remove the GoDaddy nameservers.

Also, you have not added Cloudflare to your nameservers yet. What you did is create NS records, which is not the correct thing:

theglens.net. 172800 IN NS ns01.domaincontrol.com.
theglens.net. 172800 IN NS ns02.domaincontrol.com.
;; Received 96 bytes from 192.5.6.30#53(a.gtld-servers.net) in 40 ms

theglens.net. 3600 IN NS ns01.domaincontrol.com.
theglens.net. 3600 IN NS ns02.domaincontrol.com.
theglens.net. 3600 IN NS fonzie.ns.cloudflare.com.
theglens.net. 3600 IN NS khloe.ns.cloudflare.com.

Thank you for the reply, Laudian; I really appreciate the help.

It doesn’t appear as if I can remove the GoDaddy name servers. This is my GoDaddy DNS Control Panel.

Also, you have not added Cloudflare to your nameservers yet. What you did is create NS records, which is not the correct thing:

Can you please elaborate on what I should do? Is there a doc?
Should I remove the 2 NS records for fonzie and khloe ?

Thank you

What you do in that menu will no longer be relevant after you change your nameservers, which will be in a different menu.

Thanks so much Laudian. That was the help I needed. I’ve made the change and then clicked the link on the CF site to check name servers again. I really appreciate your help.

Thanks again for your help Laudian & sdayman.

I’m active and just submitted the domain name transfer request!

GoDaddy has been screwing me for a while, and now I’m 100% through with them.
