What is the issue you’re encountering

the site is a bit slow

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

Let me explain what’s happened:

On Tuesday (March 11) at 10:38 AM (Italian time), my Better Uptime monitoring system detected connectivity issues across multiple monitoring servers, which self-resolved by 10:40 AM. Upon checking (at around 10:40 AM) using my mobile network, I experienced slow loading times and encountered a Cloudflare 520 error while navigating a section of my website. Since then, my production and development environments have suffered persistent slowness (especially for uncached pages) despite no recent code changes, and my WordPress dashboard remains sluggish while WordFence shows nothing recently changed.

In the last few days seems like the system is improved, but still there are some doubts on what’s happened. On same Tuesday I’ve tried to do some further checks using my fixed network but nothing changed. Some days later, while still having the same issue, I’ve tried to edit the hosts file in my Mac, and these delays are magically disappeared! The site became fast again, while when deleting these DNS records from the hosts file still had slowed the experience, also in the WordPress backend. So, we can assume at this point that the problem is Cloudflare, but how could be possible?

Also: now the speed is basically back to normal and the difference could be detected only sometimes, luckily now the whole experience is better, absolutely.

But this didn’t explain how this could have been happened. In general, seems like Cloudflare slow the site sometimes, and it’s strange.

Also, on March 16 the uptime monitor reported me that the site was down. The page appeared was a 521 Cloudflare error. As soon as I got the report, I checked on my side and I was no able to recreate the issue, but I can see the screenshot that the monitor created, so how could this be possible? Similar issues appeared a few other times after this case. Something is wrong here.
