Keeping nameservers unchanged for transferred domain

I have several business domains currently with NameSilo that I am thinking of transferring to Cloudflare, but one issue gives me pause.

Currently the nameservers for these domains are set to the web hosting services we have used for years, and I don’t want to have to change that unnecessarily. But Cloudflare appears to indicate that we have to switch to using their nameservers if we transfer the domain names to Cloudflare. I’m not sure what sort of disruption that might cause.

When I search for information about this, I see lots of conflicting comments, some people saying that you do have to use Cloudflare’s nameservers, others saying that you don’t.

What is the truth? And what would be the implications if I had to switch to Cloudflare’s nameservers?

If you are transferring the domain registration then you need to add the site to Cloudflare first.

You have to use Cloudflare’s nameservers (you can delegate for subdomains, but not the apex domain).

If you follow the guide here (basically ensuring everything is correctly set in advance), then you should be able to switch nameservers over with no downtime.

Once the domain is successfully added to Cloudflare you can transfer the domain, subject to the TLD being one supported by Cloudflare Registrar as here…
