We have a client that uses the State of GA’s servers for email. Can we configure a custom NS with a free Cloudflare account? I see that I can add a NS to the DNS records. If we add all 4 custom NS using the DNS area… will that work?
You can delegate nameservers for subdomains, but entering NS records for the apex domain won’t work. (The dashboard will accept them, but they won’t do anything).
You should be able to just add MX and other mail-related DNS records to Cloudflare’s DNS for the email provider.
They tell us using just a MX record will not work with their system. They require a custom NS configured. We’ve been using Google Domains… which allowed this, but want to move away from GD. Is using a custom NS possible with CF? Would be have to upgrade to a paid account?
You need to be sure of what the email provider actually means by “custom NS” as I very much doubt that it is what Cloudflare refers to as custom nameservers. The Cloudflare custom nameservers feature simply allows you to use your domain name on your Cloudflare nameservers.
e.g. fred.ns.cloudflare.com → ns1.example.com
If you want an accurate answer for this scenario, please provide more complete details of the request made by the email provider.
