Is it possible that the SSL (strict) is causing this?

you probably have to set it to FULL instead of FULL (strict).

the site gives me a 404 error when I set it to Full

Does it work when you set it to flexible?

If not there is probably something not right in your webserver config.

no, gives another error

For strict you need a valid certificate. Full should fit to get started but it’s strongly recommended to replace the invalid cert on your server with a valid one and switch to Full (strict) afterwards.

Error 404 is generated by your host, most likely because the webserver does not have a valid document root or an unknown path was requested.

I also recommend using the search to solve the 404 issue. This has been discussed hundreds of times.
