Is it necessary to use valid email in DMARC registration?

Hey guys,

In Cloudflare DNS I created a TXT record for the DMARC and I had put a valid one in the record but I was getting multiple report emails from Report Domain. So I decided to change the email in the registry to one that doesn’t exist, as below:

v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:[email protected]

**the address [email protected] doesn’t exist

I did this so that I don’t keep getting emails from Report Domain every day.

I would like to know if it is valid for me to put in the DMARC record an email that does not exist. Will DMARC work normally?

It’d be best to not use a bogus email address. That way those messages don’t bounce and take up more email bandwidth.

  1. Use your mail account to filter out these request to auto-delete. (this is what I do)
  2. Send it to a blackhole email address. Cloudflare’s email forwarder can do this on a domain that doesn’t have regular email. https://developers.cloudflare.com/email-routing/email-routing-options/
  3. Don’t include rua or ruf. I believe they’re optional.

sdayman, thanks for the reply.

I will then create a [email protected] and create a filter to exclude all emails I receive. So it doesn’t fill the inbox.

Why should I delete the street? Is he not essential?
Do you recommend that registration be as below?

v=DMARC1; p=none; mailto:[email protected]

The email address in a DMARC record is optional. That’s what I meant by rua and ruf (not streets, as a translator may have thought).

I use a filter so those messages aren’t lost in case I need to check back on any issues.

Use Postmark’s free DMARC digest service, you only get a summary of DMARC once a week instead for top 10 entries https://dmarc.postmarkapp.com/. I also use their paid service for DMARCDigest if top 10 entries isn’t not enough detail https://dmarcdigests.com/
