Is cloudflare utilizing e-tag or last-modifed-date when retrieving from origin if cache is expired?

Hi, I am trying to optimize performance in origin server. currently the response from origin server doesn’t have last-modifed-date or etag. The resource is cached on cdn for 1 hour, and almost permanently for browser. I wonder if it would help if I set last-modifed-date or etag in the response to optimize the performance when cache on CDN is expired. Ideally when cache is expired, CF can send the request with etag or last-modifed-date header, then the origin can quickly check if it can respond with a 204 response.
