Intermittent Delays on API Requests When Using Cloudflare Proxy

What is the issue you’re encountering

Up until yesterday, every request to my API was responding below 500ms. Now, approximately 1 in every 10 requests is significantly delayed (often 19-20 seconds or longer) when routed through Cloudflare’s proxy. When I bypass Cloudflare by setting the DNS to DNS Only (disabling the proxy), response times return to normal, averaging around 145ms.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

Bypassing Cloudflare Proxy: Disabling the Cloudflare proxy entirely resolved the delays, indicating that Cloudflare’s proxy is somehow involved in the latency.

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

DNS records

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

Cloudflare Settings: Basic, with no caching or specific firewall rules on API endpoints.

Has anyone else encountered Cloudflare proxy issues where only some requests experience extreme delays? I’d love guidance on:

Any settings or configurations that might reduce or eliminate this latency while still using Cloudflare’s proxy.
Potential reasons why the Cloudflare proxy might introduce such intermittent delays, given the server’s consistently fast response.
Thank you for any insights or advice you might have!

Your situation looks weirdly similar to mine, see Latency and proxy mode

We’re facing the exact same issue here. We had to disable Cloudflare Proxying in order to solve it.

Not ideal for us as we rely on some cache rules, waiting for Cloudflare to solve this issue.
