Intermittent 524 errors

What is the name of the domain?

What is the error number?

524

What is the issue you’re encountering

Over the last month, I have been getting intermittent 524 errors when trying to load my site. I use manageWP as well and get downtime notifications too. They only last a min or less sometimes.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I have checked my cloudflare rules to make sure i’m not blocking anything I shouldn’t be. I have called my hosing site, but they keep telling me that the server has had no downtime.

May I ask what SSL option have you got selected under the SSL/TLS tab at Cloudflare dashboard for your domain ( Flexible, Full, Full Strict … )?

Before moving to Cloudflare, was your Website working over HTTPS connection?

Is your Website working fine over HTTPS when you temporary Pause Cloudflare?

  • Use the “Pause Cloudflare on Site” option from the Overview tab for your domain at dash.cloudflare.com .
  • The link is in the lower right corner of that page.

Hi I use Full Strict

Yes to both HTTPS questions.

I got JS Challenge at first, however once passed I can see the Website without error and proxied :orange: Could you confirm it’s working now?

Yes it works right now. And works most of the time, but since early December I’ve been getting intermittent downtime notifications from my monitoring service ManageWP and yesterday I happened to be at a computer when it went down and saw the 524 error come through on my browser.

Trying to figure out why this is happening all of a sudden. My hosting site says the server and my site logs do not show that the site has gone down at all, so they are having me look at my cloudflare setup.

Wonder if this service is allowed by it’s IP address(es) to connect to your zone at your Cloudflare account (IP Access Rules).
Just in case as it might get tirggered by the actions due to the unknown frequency checks if the domain is “online” and “up” or not

See below post:

Hmm I guess that could be it for the ManageWP part. Not sure why after a year I would all of a sudden be running into that issue though, but I can at least try to add ManageWP to my rule list.

That doesn’t explain why yesterday I was getting the 524 error.

You mentioned getting a JS Challenge. I’ve heard a few people say this to me over the last couple of days. I haven’t changed anything on my cloudflare account so I’m not sure why this would be happening and I can’t replicate it to know what it looks like.

I do have a manage challenge WAF set up for anybody outside of certain countries to prevent a lot of bad traffic from accessing my site, but not sure why people I know inside the US are getting this now.

Thank you for feedback.

Might be the ManageWP was also challenged or not able to complete it.

May I ask have you got one or more features/options enabled from the below list?

  1. Bot Fight Mode / Super Bot Fight Mode (if on paid plan)
  2. Browser Integrity Check
  3. Custom WAF rule which would challenge everyone except visitors from e.g. your home country?

Since I’ve got it lately, I’d suggest you to double-check the Security → Events at Cloudflare dashboard under your Cloudflare account for your zone, or via direct link https://dash.cloudflare.com/?to=/:account/:zone/security/events.

You should be able to see the challenged or blocked event under the Security tab → Events at Cloudflare dashboard for your zone and know exactly which security option was triggered. Could be Managed Rules my best guess, otherwise Bot Fight Mode or Browser Integrity Check.

For help for my case as I got JS Challenge, lookup for country Croatia using Filter.

Agree, it’s good to have it configured :+1:

  1. Bot Fight Mode / Super Bot Fight Mode (if on paid plan)
  2. Browser Integrity Check
  3. Custom WAF rule which would challenge everyone except visitors from e.g. your home country?

I do have both 1 & 2 on (free plan only options).

For WAF rules I have it set up to manage challenge for everybody outside of the US and Canada. I run a fantasy sports site, so not a lot of legit traffic comes from outside those two countries.

You said you are from Croatia? That would make sense that you are getting it. I know somebody that lives in Georgia (US) that got it just a couple days ago, that one is very confusing to me.

Do you think I should turn off Bot Fight Mode and Browser Integrity? That seems like I would get a lot of bad traffic entering my site all of a sudden no?

Thanks for feedback.

Yea, you got it configured correctly. Please, keep it as-is, no change needed.

Might have think further what’s with that ManageWP service then

I’m contacting their support as well now that you mention them being blocked.

Still doesn’t give me an answer as to why the 524 error was coming through yesterday and my hosting plan was saying nothing was showing up on their end in the log files.

Exactly what I was thinking to suggest about.

Nevertheless, you could track & trace for next days or if possible, from past period, to cross-check if it’s the same timing, etc.

Wonder if it could be some temporary network routing issue, or the server/hosting itself restarts daily.

Cool. I’ll update this as soon as I hear something back from ManageWP. Or if my hosting plan provides any extra info.

Thanks for your help so far.
