If I'm assigning routes to my worker from an available zone, do I still need to add an A record for that domain in the DNS settings?

Pretty much as the title. I’ve added an A record that allows * to be proxied by Cloudflare, but I’m not sure if it’s necessary if I have the route setting in the worker trigger config.

Another point to note is that this didn’t work before I added the route - i.e. I had the A record, but I was getting 522 timeout errors on sub-domains. Why would this be the case? Shouldn’t both the A record and the route setting be doing exactly the same thing?

I’m not sure where you got this impression from? The route (or Workers Custom Domains) is what invokes the Worker, the DNS entry simply has to exist to get to Cloudflare in the first place.
