How to escape KV values uploaded with the API?

According to this

Write a value identified by a key. Use URL-encoding to use special characters (e.g. :, !, %) in the key name. Body should be the value to be stored. Existing values and expirations will be overwritten. If neither expiration nor expiration_ttl is specified, the key-value pair will never expire. If both are set, expiration_ttl is used and expiration is ignored.

That seems straightforward enough but in the example the body is shown encapsulated in quotes:

curl -X PUT “
-H “X-Auth-Email: [email protected]
-H “X-Auth-Key: c2547eb745079dac9320b638f5e225cf483cc5cfdda41”
-H “Content-Type: text/plain”
–data ‘“Some Value”’

So does that mean that the double quotes around Some Value are part of the value in this example? How would one go about uploading a binary value?
