"Grey Cloud" direct records now returning "Orange Cloud" CDN IPs

What is the name of the domain?

What is the issue you’re encountering

I have a domain which uses cloudflare’s nameservers. The domain has a few subdomains which use “dns only” or “grey cloud” resolution, which has been working flawlessly for months. Today I noticed that those subdomains are returning three CDN IP addresses when I do a dig, as if the subdomains were in “proxied” or “orange cloud” mode. I had not made any changes or even logged in to my cloudflare account.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I have tried looking at the cloudflare status page to see if there is an issue with direct dns resolution. I have reviewed my zone for the domain and found that things are already configured correctly. I have also tried toggling the cloud of one affected subdomain from “direct” to “proxied” and back, which did not resolve the issue with that subdomain. I have done a dig @1.1.1.1 to bypass local and network dns caching layers.

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

It doesn’t at the moment…

It may be your domain was set to parking nameservers by your registrar as it wasn’t renewed in time (it does now seem to be renewed). You need to set the Cloudflare nameservers again at your registrar.
