GCP Network Data Transfer Out via Carrier Peering Network - EMEA Based - Billing Charges

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

Hi,
I moved a GCP VM from the US to EMEA (Belgium) because most of my visitors are from Europe but I see now I have payed more in “Network Data Transfer Out via Carrier Peering Network - EMEA Based” and I have daily charges. How can I avoid - reduce these extra charges? I am using CDN Cloudflare and I have Premium as Network Tier in GCP. Could this have to do with Cloudflare as I cannot see why I am being charged for this traffic.

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

I don’t know

I want also to clarify that I did not have these charges before when the VM location was US based. Could these also has to do with the EU location? I see that Cloudflare has a data center in Berlin and not in Belgium. Should I move the VM to Berlin instead?

Same or different IP address since moving between the regions?
Meaning, Cloudflare cache, if you’ve got it configured, and if you changed the IP address to which DNS records were pointed at DNS tab of Cloudflare dashboard, might Cloudflared needed to fetch them over again (if they were not cached at the edge for e.g. a month).

The traffic patterns likely changed due to how GCP and Cloudflare route data.

It does have a POP in Belgium:

Moving the VM closer to one of Cloudflare’s primary European data centers, such as Frankfurt or Amsterdam, could reduce transfer charges.
Before moving, verify whether your Website visitors are closer to Berlin, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam, and choose the GCP region accordingly. I’d suggest using tools such as Cloudflare Analytics to analyze where your Website visitors are coming from.

I have replaced the IP with one for the GCP VMs in EU region. I then updated Cloudflare DNS and I was expecting this to be enough. Somehow I missed the POP in Belgium. My visitors are from Greece. I am not sure moving the VM closer to one of Cloudflare’s primary European data centers will reduce or even better eliminate the extra charges. Thanks for the suggestion of using tools such as Cloudflare Analytics to better understand network traffic, as it seems I will not get a clear answer from the GCP.

Hey just checked the HTTP traffic for December from Cloudflare and it shows that visits from Greece and United States are very close. I know that there is no way I have so many visits from US and comparing with Google Analytics data confirms that. Any idea why Cloudflare shows high http traffic from the US? I have included side by side the reports from Cloudflare and Google Analytics

Thank you for feedback in the meantime.

All Cloudflare IPs are in :us: , therefrom quite a lot of traffic is expected from there  due to the re-caching.

Nevertheless, except search engines and their crawling & indexing, Google, Bing, or Amazon bots my best guess:thinking:
