Free cloudflare domain records are not propagating
What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?
I have a free plan domain dicebackws.work and i have two DNS records, both CNAME. One points the apex domain to a different domain and is DNS only with TTL 1 day and the other points the subdomain test.dicebackws.work to another domain using cloudflare proxy. almost 90 hours have passed since I set the records and they are still not propagated. I don’t know how to troubleshoot any further. I should mention that my TLS/SSL option is Full (strict) , don’t know if that has anything to do with my problem but might as well leave the information here.
What feature, service or problem is this related to?
CNAME records will never propagate on the apex domain, as that is a violation of the DNS specifications, and therefore, Cloudflare will apply CNAME flattening for you, that is working around the problem.
The public will only see AAAA and A records, when CNAME flattening is in effect.
As you have set the Proxy status for that record to Proxied (), that one will likewise never propagate, as the public will see Cloudflare IP addresses in that state, with AAAA and A records, and not the actual CNAME.
This domain name does not exist, and that is the main issue to your whole problem.
If you want it, find a domain registrar and register it.
According to the domain registry, the domain name does not exist.
Travelling from the TLD (work) down to the domain name also reveals a DNS code 3 (NXDOMAIN).
And that quite much explains the lack of DNS propagation for that domain name.
By digging a bit deeper, -
It looks like that domain name was active on Cloudflare earlier this year, so if you had this domain name previously, for example during the first half of 2024, it seems like the domain name may have expired, because you didn’t pay the renewal fees for the domain name with your domain registrar.
And due to that, the domain registration was released, so that the domain name is currently available, so that anyone has the opportunity to register it.
The status of “Active”, as shown in your screenshot, seems quite odd though, but I don’t expect that status to continue.
Thanks for the help, I think the fact that in the dashboard had the status active was what confused me. I also searched for the domain to buy it and saw that it was available to buy. I don’t know if this is a bug regarding the dashboard or that’s the intended functionality. If the latter is true then it is a bit confusing.
