Exchange Online + Proxied record = Error

Exchange Online (i.e., Microsoft) can’t see the necessary CNAME autodiscover record when it’s proxied in Cloudflare.

It isn’t clear to me the downside of turning the proxy status off for this record. Can anyone help explain the ramifications?

(I’m assuming I can’t keep it proxied, but I’m awaiting a response from Microsoft support.)

You don’t need to hear from Microsoft support. There is no downside to setting that CNAME to DNS Only. You are correct in determining that it should not be proxied.
