Email Says Error 521: Web Server Is Down But Not Down

What is the name of the domain?

What is the error number?

521

What is the error message?

Server Unreachable | Error 521: Web server is down

What is the issue you’re encountering

Lately, I have been getting emails from Cloudflare regarding, Server Unreachable for internetmarketerdotcom.com, Server Unreachable for exbackdotcom.com, and Server Unreachable for internettvdotcom.com. Hostgator says there is no hosting/server issue and no error logs pointing to an issue. All 3 of my WordPress sites are online and working. Could this be a false alarm? I have not changed anything on my end, except updating plugins. I have been using my sites with Cloudflare for years.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

None… I don’t see an issue on my end and Hostgator says there is no issue.

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

N/A

I am seeing this as well - and it’s across multiple domains on several networks/hosting companies. These email notices have just started in the past day or two - and I know nothing has changed on at least one of the servers where multiple domains are hosted.

But I am also getting the notices for domains on Hostgator and HostPapa. They have never occurred before yesterday. The huge number of these notices and the fact it’s for websites across multiple hosting companies makes me wonder if there is something recent on Cloudflare’s end.

Yes, that would raise an eyebrow from what you told me. I’m still getting those Cloudflare emails stating Error 521. Right now, everything seems to point to some kind of recent change in Cloudflare, not of my doing. I also submitted a support ticket and must wait a few days for a reply.

Thanks for your reply, pbsumpter. The other odd thing is that a couple of these websites receive a decent amount of traffic, but not a single complaint about any errors or downtime. Every time I receive an email, I check the site in question, and all is normal and fine. If it was just one or two domains on a single host, I’d dig deeper, but this is perhaps more than a dozen sites spread out over at least three different hosting companies.

It’s like some kind of glitch there - I just cannot see it it being an issue with the sites, the servers, and especially as one of the servers is my own, and nothing has changed. It’s a sudden odd thing.

I did some further checking. I have 2 other websites (launched in 2024) using a different hosting company with Cloudflare for each. So far I have not been getting any Cloudflare emails with Error 521 for those websites. So there might be something else going on in Cloudflare regarding my 3 sites (launched many years ago with Cloudflare) where I getting Error 521. Just have to wait for support to direct me.

We have been receiving these emails as well for a few sites since early this morning. The vast majority of sites we have on Cloudflare are not getting these email alerts though. We can find no issues on the server, all the sites appear to be working, our uptime monitors show 100% uptime for the last 24 hours, and we have received no reports of downtime or issues from users.

I’ve also received a couple of these for my personal domains too, which as far as I can tell are still functioning without issue, one of which is just a Cloudflare Worker.

I’ve escalated this to the team to investigate further, in case more erroneous alerts are sent.

We’ve also been receiving these, across multiple Cloudflare accounts and multiple hosts. Probably close to 100 notification emails in the last 24 hours so far. Initially thought it might be related to Seattle power outages as some of our sites are hosted there, but many of the ones receiving notices are not.
