Email Relay Denial Messages - Following Transfer From SquareSpace

What is the name of the domain?

drgalassi.com

What is the error number?

550 5.7.1

What is the error message?

Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.7.1 Relaying denied

What is the issue you’re encountering

I transferred this domain from SquareSpace to Cloudflare. The DNS settings were set using Cloudflare’s quick scan when transferring the domain to Cloudflare. Emails sent to the domain (for example to the catch-all [email protected] email address) get through, but I’m also getting parallel messages with this error code saying that the relaying has been denied. I’m assuming that the issue is to do with the DNS settings but can’t figure out what’s wrong.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I’ve read the Cloudflare email documentation and looked through the community posts, but can’t find anything that’s pointing me to a resolution.

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

Easy to reproduce - any email I send to [email protected] results in the receipt of 2 emails - the first being the actual email itself and the second containing this relay denied message. Example attached.

Any suggestions for what I need to do to resolve this issue would be very gratefully accepted!

Resolved the issue.

The solution couldn’t have been more obvious! I simply tried setting up a new email forwarding rule for the drgalassi.com and Cloudflare highlighted the conflicting DNS settings causing a problem and suggested new DNS settings.

Having deleted the problematic settings and replaced them with the new ones suggested by Cloudflare, all seems to be working fine!

Note that you have completely disabled Mailgun which you were using for sending and receiving emails… replacing it with Cloudflare Email Routing which can only receive email and has no SMTP service (so you can’t use it to send emails with your domain).

If this was your goal, then you’re all set.

Good luck!

Hi GeorgeAppiah,

Thanks for your reply and that definitely wasn’t my intention!! As you can probably guess, I’m new to DNS and email routing, hence hadn’t realised the need for Mailgun.

Anyway, I’ve put things back to where they were ie. using Mailgun, as I want to be able to send emails as well as receive them.

And the issue is back - of course(!)

Any thoughts on how I might resolve the underlying problem?

Many thanks.
