Are you trying to add your site to Cloudflare? Unless using a partial setup (which requires a Business Plan), you must use the 2 allocated Cloudflare nameservers to validate your domain.

thank you for your quick reply. The problem is that I cannot change the DNS servers my domain uses. I understand that in the Pro plan it is not possible to verify the domain in a different way?

Correct. It is not just for verification, it is required so Cloudflare can manage your DNS and you can use Cloudflare features.

I only need to protect one of my subdomains, but I can’t do that without verifying the root domain.
