Domain Transfer Error occuring

What is the name of the domain?

cvphotography.org

What is the error message?

Registry status: Client transfer prohibited. Please unlock and allow a few hours to update.

What is the issue you’re encountering

I am trying to transfer my domain from Hover to here on cloudflare and when I go to the “Transfer Domains” option, it says “Registry status: Client transfer prohibited. Please unlock and allow a few hours to update.” - Its been now 16+ hours since I originally saw this notice and it still hasn’t changed to allow me to enter a auth code to fully transfer it here to cloudflare.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I have looked at other community posts and have waited for the system to possibly update and fix its self but it hasn’t. I know am coming on to this community forum to post and ask if anyone can help.

That domain’s expiry date is August 9th. Did you recently renew it?

No. I had a year of use on Hover and had it set so that it would not auto-renew when the renew date hit.

It has not been renewed

While expired domains can be transferred (per ICANN rules), registrars can put all sorts of impediments in the way. Throw in Cloudflare’s own quirks… and you risk losing your domain if you don’t transfer it at least 30 days before expiration.

In this case, the domain is currently in autoRenewPeriod state and not likely to transfer due to billing implications at your current registrar. (Again, it’s one of those situations you don’t want to count on ICANN’s rules due to registrar shenanigans and Cloudflare’s quirks.)

autoRenewPeriod is when registrars proactively renew domains on your behalf, but only for a short period of time. If you don’t pay to renew it in their control panel, they will cancel the renewal (and receive refund from the registry)… after which your domain may enter redemptionPeriod.

If you want to keep this domain, pay to renew it immediately at your crrent registrar – to avoid getting into redemptionPeriod and having to pay exorbitant redemption fees to restore it.

Then wait for 45 days (I’d go longer, to be safe) and transfer it to Cloudflare. The waiting is to ensure you don’t lose the second year of payment/renewal for the transfer (if this happens, ICANN rules say the losing registrar must issue a refund, but good luck with that!)

Of course, Cloudflare Registrar may be able to transfer the domain in the present state after all. Buf if I’ve waited for hours and this is still not working, I’d take the safer route.

Good luck!

So I read through all of this and was a bit confused by some of what you were saying. I decided now that I’m off of work, to check cloudflare and see if anything has changed.

When I looked it is allowing me to transfer to cloudflare now

Thank you for your advice/suggestion but I think my issue solved automatically but still needed a bit more time even after creating this post of the hours it already was taking.

Let’s hope it goes through.

I can see at Tucows the expiration date has reverted to the original expiration date of 2024-08-09 (was definitely 2025-08-09 when I checked yesterday), and the status has also changed from autoRenewPeriod to ok.

If you’ve initiated the transfer already, I would have expected the status pendingTransfer… but, well, let’s just wait to see what happens.

And we’re back to where we were before, but with the expected pendingTransfer status added
