Domain setup nameservers confusion

What is the name of the domain?

marv.me.uk

What is the error number?

n/a

What is the error message?

invalid nameservers

What is the issue you’re encountering

Initial domain transfer to cloudflare … In the cloudflare help i found a page which told me to set these nameservers with my current registrar: annabel.ns.cloudflare.com (ditto rodrigo too) However, 123-reg say these do not exist & would not allow me to set them.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

Then i came across a page which says to set these nameservers:

sasha.ns.cloudflare.com (ditto sullivan to)

123-reg did allow me to set (last evening) those but …
my cloudflare account page now (12+ hours later) shows as:

“invalid nameservers”

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

repeat initial steps

Two different sets of cloudflare nameservers is a very good indicator you are logged into the wrong account. Check the domain has nameservers here, DNS Propagation Checker - Global DNS Testing Tool. If the two you see on whatsmydns are not the two you see shown on this page, https://dash.cloudflare.com/?to=/:account/:zone/dns then you are most certainly in the wrong account.

The only way you’ll be able to regain access is by having access to the email address of the other account. I’d start with this link, if you don’t know the email. Do that and then check any other email accounts for an email on gaining access. This link may help, but it only work when logged out, if you don’t know the email: https://dash.cloudflare.com/forgot-emai

Hi cloonan, thanks for replying.
I only have one account, only ever had one account.
Yes, they are wrong/different but i can’t get my current registrar to change to what they should be, annabel and rodrigo, as they claim the the annabel and rodrigo nameservers do not exist.
Here’s a screen shot (if it works) …

hi again cloonan,
i’ve posted a reply on the help site then signed off to try the email link which gave me:

Yeah, as my domain is still “pending” it’s not actually considered “active”.
Nice try though and a great link to have on hand, thanks.
Thanks again for your ideas.

kenn, aka ‘marv’ - honest :))

Your domain is currently set to use sasha and sullivan at your registrar. These nameservers are not resolving for your domain so either someone set them in error, or they have changed as you have deleted the zone and re-added it, or they are in another account where a plan hasn’t been selected yet.

However if you want to use the account you are in, then yes you need your registrar to change so your domain uses annabel and rodrigo - they most definitely exist and as you can see in the link below if you click under them, they are resolving for your domain as in your screenshot…

For 123-reg you should just be able to change the nameservers in the control panel. What happens when you do that?

You can delete the 2 NS records shown in the screenshot from your Cloudflare DNS records as they don’t do anything.

I suspect it’s #1 above. I don’t see a delete & readd and I don’t see the zone in any other account.

i set sasha + sullivan as the 2nd cloudflare help i looked at said to and annabelle + rodrigo had failed (see below).
Yes, i can now see that sasha+sullivan is wrong (see below)

the current registrar, 123-reg app, consistently gives, “does not exist” for the annabelle+rodrigo addresses.
Plus, when i phoned the 123-reg support they see i would need to speak to cloudflare about annabelle+rodrigo addresses not existing. Again i can see they must be wrong but it’s like talking to a parrot.

For 123-reg you should just be able to change the nameservers in the control panel. What happens when you do that?
Yes, that is precisely what i have done a number of times and the app replies that annabelle+rodrigo settings can’t be set as they don’t exist and calls (plural) to their support get “sort out with CF”

You can delete the 2 NS records shown in the screenshot from your Cloudflare DNS records as they don’t do anything.
OK, i will do that after i’ve got annabelle+rodrigo working , and then dumped 123-reg

Many thanks for your help … and cloonan too.

I will get onto the 123-reg app just as soon as i’ve finished topping up with coffee and my meds have kicked in so i can see my mobile (the 123-reg won’t work on my desktop and i’ve tried using firefox, chrome, chromium, brave and i think i tried opera too - their support say that’t my firewall or vpn (which are both turned off).

I have changed one of my 123-reg domains to point at them no problem…

Are you sure you are typing the full names correctly? Can you show a screenshot?

That’s not the correct spelling so check that, autocorrect may be changing it.

Seems that was likely the problem as the nameservers are now set.

Well spotted SJR, dunno where (when) that crept in.
However, i did type it correctly to start with, viz:

I’ve been on the 123-reg app again and entered the required the correct annabel into the DNS setting and it accepted it although dowan’t show and changes within the app (still shows old sasha).
However, i checked the propagation checker link you sent me and old the french and the indian sub-continent think i prefer sasha to annabel - i guess telling 1.4 billion people must take a long time :))

Many, many thanks for all of your help, i’ll give it a day then start on the transfer of registrar process …

Thanks again

everything looks, to me at least, to be fine now according to (my reading of):
https://cf.sjr.dev/tools/check?63c0889b36424d0bbf1d850a9817ac61
Therefore i’m going to add a card to my CF account and see if i can transfer it from 123-reg
Wish me luck
Thanks again for your help

Sorry, question:
The transfer domain process needs an “IPS tag” to be entered at the old registrar. The box to enter this in the 123-Reg app is tiny, suggesting 2 or 3 characters only.
Is there a short code for this ISP tag that means Cloudflare please?

Sorry, i should prob have mentioned that “Cloudflare” not only doesn’t ‘fit’ (it can be entered but the box is too small to see all of what has been entered) plus it shows as “invalid IPS tag”.

Check with your old registrar why it won’t fit, the IPS tag to use is CLOUDFLARE.

i’ve found “other” instructions …
this is what i’ve been trying to do:

this version says to do stuff on CF first:

It’s too late to start with 123-reg now, i’ll try them in the morning.

If i said “Houston we have touchdown” i’m sure you must know where i’m at now.
Many thanks to all for your help and advice … and links too.
