Domain Registration & CDN Question

Hi all,

Just a quick question, if I register a domain on Cloudflare and get the CDN with that what happens if my hosting is elsewhere (Bluehost or Hostgator) for example?

Some of those sites offer CDN as an extra. If i have CDN where my domain is registered do i also need CDN when i buy my hosting plan? Curious how that works. I dont wanna pay twice for CDN if i dont need to.

Any help appreciated. Also does Cloudflare domain registration include SSL?

Thank you for asking.

You can register a domain name at Cloudflare Registrar, but you do not have to use Cloudflare services at all, if so.

If you plan to use Cloudflare for your domain name/website, therefore you would have to create an Cloudflare account and add your domain name to your Cloudflare account.
In the process, you will be provided with your Cloudflare nameservers which you set for your domain name at your domain registrar (or you do not have to if you registered your domain at Cloudflare Registrar).

Nevertheless, using the DNS tab of Cloudflare dashboard, you configure your DNS records as needed and point to your hosting provider IP.

Furthermore, you can even use a 3rd-party email provider like Google Workspace, Office 365, etc. and point the needed DNS record to them to make sure it all works.

May I suggest below two articles for more additional information and better understanding how Cloudflare works and it’s “CDN”:

Right. You can try and use Cloudflare for free.

Therefore, if you plan to upload and host your website files at Cloudflare, unfortunately this is not yet possible - it’s in the development I believe.

In that case, if interested, I would suggest to try out BunnyCDN →

You get:

  1. Universal SSL (Free Universal SSL/TLS certificates · Cloudflare SSL/TLS docs) → which is used to encrypt traffic between Cloudflare and your website visitors (you can also order an “Dedicated SSL” using Advanced Certificate Manager interface if needed) → Advanced certificates · Cloudflare SSL/TLS docs
  2. In case you do not have an origin SSL certificate, you can use Cloudflare Origin CA certificate and install it at your server → Origin CA certificates · Cloudflare SSL/TLS docs
