Domain registrar transfer question (re: ownership)

We (companyY.com) are absorbing another firm (companyX.com) and will be taking over their domain which is currently registered and DNS maintained outside of Cloudflare. I’m eager to get their domain into Cloudflare to better control DNS records (for mail migration etc.) but also to make sure we preserve the domain registration going forward.

I have direct dashboard access to their current registrar, logging in under the current owner’s account (with his blessing) so I could technically initiate a transfer into Cloudflare at any point, as far as the dashboard goes. I’ll probably just point DNS to Cloudflare first, because we’ll be in the process of changing their email pointers, etc.

I see the option to change ownership of the domain at the old registrar’s site (along with the unlock option to transfer). Am I able to leave the owner information as is, just unlock/initiate the transfer now, bring it into Cloudflare under our existing domains at Cloudflare, and we can edit the owner once it is here? Or do we need to change the owner at the existing registrar first (wait 60 days) and then transfer it in?

Thanks!

Hi @user6535, there are a few restrictions for transferring domains, including the one that you mentioned about the waiting time.

In our documentation you will find that:

ICANN rules prohibit a domain from being transferred if it has been registered or previously transferred within the last 60 days or if the WHOIS Registrant contact information was modified in the last 60 days (even if redacted).

So my recommendations is to transfer the Domain to Cloudflare Registrar first and then change the owner’s information.
