I’m testing D1 and plan to use vectorize db once we upgrade to workers paid, but seeing the information about my D1 DB I see that is in North America (ENAM). The documentation explains that you can give a location hint, which i didn’t so it should have chosen Chile:
By default, D1 will automatically create your database in a location close to where you issued the request to create a database.
One of main reasons of choosing Cloudflare is that It has servers in Chile and other similar DB services don’t, so if my DBs are not in Chile or at least in a closer location, cloudflare is just as many other services to us.
D1 runs on Durable Objects, which only exist in some select data centers. There’s no Durable Objects in South America currently, there’s a nice community site here: Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile (colo) | Where Durable Objects Live Closest is East Coast US.
Cloudflare builds a lot of their products (R2, Queues, Waiting Room, etc) on Durable Objects. In terms of Durable Object support in South America, in the discord earlier in april a Cloudflare employee shared they were aiming to get India and South America set up before the end of this year. We’ll see.
Last I heard about Vectorize (~3 months ago) was all requests were going through PDX/Core/West Coast. They are working on Vectorize V2 which is in some sort of private beta at the moment I believe, not something I’ve played around with but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was built on Durable Objects itself and had the same limitations. You could ask in the discord vectorize channel for more info on that.
