Initiating the authentication process in the Active Campaign portal

The lightning symbol next to the CNAMEs means that CNAME flattening is enabled for them. You need to disable that.

It might be a per record setting or there’s also a global CNAME flattening setting.

Other threads with the same issue say to enable flattening. It was as not working when flattening was off

That makes no sense. In which threads did you read that?

Anyway, you need to turn it off.

The solution in that thread was also to disable CNAME flattening.
